Of imposing size, the deep rounded sides rising from a tapered foot to a subtly foliated rim, the interior centered with a large medallion of an official, standing on a terrace with chequered floor, he is carrying a ruyi sceptre, in the background plantain issuing from stylised rockwork, the cavetto with panels with figural scenes and houses divided by floral motifs, the exterior painted with soldiers within a mountainous, cloud-filled landscape.

It is rare to find such a bowl with kraak style painting inside and 'Chinese taste' style painting on the outside. This bowl is extremely fine. I have occasionally seen examples with two styles of painting but in this quality I have only seen three others. For a discussion on Kraak porcelain generally, see M. Rinaldi's work, Kraak Porselein, A Moment in the History of Trade, London, 1989.
